Powerhouse Nutrition 101

Do the nutrition needs of the "active" person differ from that of the "{inactive" person?

It may surprise you to learn that in many ways, your nutritional requirements are not that different from someone who has chosen to be less active. You both have the same needs for a variety of nutrients, including vitamins and minerals, about the same requirements (based on a % of total calories) for fat, and surprisingly, your protein need is only slightly higher as an active person than that of the inactive person.

The two major nutritional differences of an "active" vs. "inactive" person is your CALORIE intake and your CARBOHYDRATE intake. Both of which would be determined based upon the type, duration and intensity of your activity. "Carbs" are the body's most efficient energy source. Without adequate carbohydrate sources in the diet you will fatigue or exhaust easily. Of coarse adeqaute fluid intake preferably in the form of water is also needed to maintain the bodies fluid balance.

So you ask--How do I get started?

First, Healthy living should include a combination of daily healthful eating habits and exercise on a regular consistent basis. Second, lets get rid of the word "diet". A healthy meal plan should include foods from all of the major food groups; Fiber rich whole grains, Low fat/Fat free dairy, Lean Meats/alternatives and colorful fruits and vegetables. Your nutritional needs will differ based on your Height, Weight, Age, Gender, Activity level and personal medical and fitness goals.
